Gordon McCoun’s Legacy Gift to Help Ensure South Kent’s Vibrant Future
“South Kent School was in my blood,” says Gordon McCoun ‘70, whose family has a long-standing connection to the school. His grandfather held a deep admiration for the founder and first headmaster, Samuel Bartlett, and his father and uncles all attended the school. “Once I was born a boy, the decision was practically made.”
Gordon says self-sufficiency is one of the most important things he gained by attending South Kent. “The school instilled a conviction in me that no matter what life throws my way, I can handle it,” he says. “That’s a powerful thing to carry into adulthood.” To ensure that South Kent continues to offer a safe environment rooted in timeless values—where boys can learn about themselves and grow into thoughtful, grounded men—Gordon has included a legacy gift to the school in his will.
“My goal is to help make South Kent more sustainable: not just surviving but thriving into its next century,” Gordon says. “I hope the funds can be used both to support day-to-day operations and to empower leadership to pursue bold, value-creating programs. It’s not just about keeping the lights on; it’s about building something meaningful and lasting.”
Gordon is “deeply impressed” with current Head of School Brian Sullivan and the team he has recruited to bring real-world experience and fresh energy to campus. “For the first time, I saw South Kent not just as an institution with a storied past but as a school with a vibrant and sustainable future,” he says.
Gordon encourages others to consider the legacy gifts they could leave to support future students. “There’s never been a more urgent need or a better opportunity for a school like South Kent,” he concludes. “The combination of mission, leadership, and momentum is unlike anything I’ve seen before. If you’ve ever thought about giving back, now is the time to do it.”
